Just wanted to let you know that next week we'll be running a submission drive across Discogs and Bookogs to increase submissions of music books, like biographies, memoirs, lyric collections, photography books, magazines - anything that fits in the music genre. We'd love your help in getting our number of music books up!

It'll be kind of similar to our yearly S.P.IN (September Pledge Initiative) drive, but just focusing on music. We'll have the progress bar and leaderboard running, and lots of discussion around music books. We're aiming to get 1000 music books added in a week - it's ambitious, but I think also totally within reach.

I'll link the landing page here a bit closer to the time. We're looking forward to getting started!

Books about musical instruments?

Yeah, that counts. Just be sure to submit it with the Music genre so it's counted towards the goal and leaderboard

Our music book submission drive, Bibliophonic is kicking off today! Add your music books to the database and see your name ascend up the leaderboard here: https://www.bookogs.com/bibliophonic
tam89rds is taking an early lead - can they maintain the top spot throughout the week?

We'll also be sharing blog posts here this week on how music books helped build the Discogs database, the state of music magazines and their importance to documenting music history, what goes into writing a biography, and more.

Thanks for getting involved!

Are unofficial books going to be banned just like the records are on Discogs?

haha, unwillingly! I started adding my music mags and zine collection like 2 weeks ago... still way to go! Spin day has been everyday for me for a few months now!
take care you all!

Depends on your definition of an unofficial book, but our guidelines state that you can submit anything made available to the general public, either as a commercially sold object, or as free give-away.

As far as Discogs banning unofficial records, sounds like there might be a slight misunderstanding here as unofficial records are indeed excluded from the marketplace, but they're not removed from the database.

Great timing! We're cheering for you 🎉

Is there a definition of music book? Are books of music tabs ok? Discographies? (auto)biographies of musicians? concert programmes?

Genre "Opera"?

We have a subject page for opera:

Why do we need this page now?

https://www.bookogs.com/browse/book?genre=Opera

If you ask me, we don't. But since the whole Genre list has been in limbo for a while now, there is some overlap.

Personally I'd just use the subjects, because that's what they are. The Genre list only has a selected few (blues, rock, reggae, heavy metal, jazz, opera?) while we have subjects for a lot more, and can immediately create new ones if needed.

Yes, I would class all of the above as music books. The Sheet Music format should also cover tabs, and discographies and (auto)biographies are definitely welcome.

Thanks for jumping in here, mirva, I agree with your recommendation. The genres list has gotten kind of wayward and needs some attention, I'm hoping to address that soon.

Looks like we have a lot of new Blues books coming in, and a new #1 contributor on the leaderboard https://www.bookogs.com/bibliophonic Let's keep it rolling

We can submit items without photos?

dmg111 We can submit items without photos?

Yes, and as I see it, the cataloguing is the important bit.

As I wise man once said:
You can't judge an apple by looking at a tree,
You can't judge honey by looking at the bee,
You can't judge a daughter by looking at the mother,
You can't judge a book by looking at the cover.…

Ok - thanks! That will definitely help speed up the process, and I can upload photos after the drive.

Thanks :-)
It's not a small task, so taking some time to assess the situation is understandable.

It's true, you don't have to submit items with photos, but we do encourage it. That said, if you want to submit as much as you can this week and add photos later, I have no problem with that.

Thanks for your patience! I know it's been a long time coming.

Amazing progress on the subs by the way, everyone. Already over 60% of the way to our 1000 target

When does this end? According to my LibraryThing account, I have more music books somewhere. I'll need the weekend to check storage.

It goes through Sunday

That's a wrap on Bibliophonic - what an incredible result!

Thank you all so much for your efforts on this submission drive - last week was our best week for submissions ever on Bookogs by quite a margin.

Congratulations to porosin for topping the leaderboard early on and holding onto the top spot for the whole week. Well done to tam89rds for a close second - great to see what you've achieved in a week.

Even though the submission drive is done, we'd love to see music books keep coming. Thanks again, and have a great week!

Hi:
I understand that the Music Book drive has ended, but how do I specify that upcoming new submissions are music oriented such as Bio's, style histories, etc.

Thanks,
BIGJIMMA

You can use genres and/or the About/Subject credit.

For example here:
https://www.bookogs.com/book/619766-his-way-the-unauthorized-biography-of-frank-sinatra

I've added:
Genres: Music, Biography
About/Subject: Frank Sinatra

Just to note that the About/Subject credit is not for persons only, but we also have a bunch of other music-related subjects:
https://www.bookogs.com/wiki/subject-list#music

And if needed, you're also free to create new ones. :-)
