I mentioned this at Filmogs but wanted to mention it here as well. http://www.filmo.gs/forum/20899-Bug-report-Duplicate-companies-entered-on-same-initial-release

When submitting any item to the databases, if there is an author or artist that has more than one credit for that item, and they are not already in the database, then it will create a duplicate entry. Example below

  1. John Doe is new to the database
  2. I submit a book with him as the author
  3. If he also has an artwork credit, I put that in as well on the same initial sub
  4. This creates two John Does

The current fix is:
1. Submit the item with John Doe as author
2. Save the sub
3. Edit the sub and add the John Doe credit being careful to select his name from the drop down menu as I'm typing the name. If I type the name fully, it will still create a second John Doe.

I hope all that makes sense.

That must be a new bug as early submissions I did where the author had more than one credit seemed to work ok. Did this start after the ANV option was brought it or have I not understood what you meant?

It started when authors got their own profiles. We should create a dummy relase to test things like this.

Same problem I was trying to explain before (http://www.biblio.gs/forum/6505-Duplicate), but this thread lays it out more clearly.

It happened again here. http://www.biblio.gs/book/46087-Cacti-The-Illustrated-Dictionary

If you look at the Copyright entries, disneyfacts did the right thing by entering the credits and using the ANVs, but since it was done in the same edit as the author credits, they are now duplicates.

I've PM'ed disneyfacts over at Discogs so he knows about this bug.

I've fixed the two linked here. Does this just happen with the Author credit, or does it happen with other credits as well?

How long ago did this start? I'm not sure how long it's been since authors got profiles.

It happens to persons and companies and began when the profile pages started, so a couple weeks I suppose.

Bumping to keep this bug report at the top.

Bumping again.

The longer this bug stays, the more duplicates show up.

Hi folks, sorry for the delay in getting back to you here. We are aware of this bug, and have looked at ways to fix it. It is going to take some time to fix, and we have quite a lot on right now, so I can't say we'll get to it soon. As noted, once you know about it, the way to avoid it is to only add new entities once to the initial submission creating that entity, then go back and add in the other credits. You are welcome to let us know in this thread when you see the problem come up, so we can keep tabs on how much it is happening. Thanks!

Thanks for the update.

I understand staff won't be able to fix this for some time, so I'm trying to figure out a way for users who have not seen this thread to know about it. I've fixed several subs in recent days where this is happening. Here is one http://www.biblio.gs/book/50835-Das-kleine-Schweinchen-und-die-Farben

Can a warning be placed at the top of the subform?

Thanks, Adambassador for fixing the duplicates in my contributions. I will re-check every contribution I did so far and hope It'll not happen again.

Ah - and since you presented a current fix:

If someone made this "mistake" and two John Doe profiles were created, there also will be two John Doe's appearing in the drop down menu when you start typing "John Do...".
I hope it is always the first appearing name which leads to the correct profile.

Another possibility could be to stop the contribution of new books until the bug is fixed.

I edited all my duplicates.

"If someone made this "mistake" and two John Doe profiles were created, there also will be two John Doe's appearing in the drop down menu when you start typing "John Do...".

Yes, that seems to be the case. The first one in the drop down is the first one created.

Ah, I see... So wherever I have put, for example, and author/illustrator this will create a dupe... This will be quite annoying.

So now I'm trying to enter another book printed by "Richard Clay (The Chaucer Press) Ltd" and I'm getting 6 identical versions in the drop-down list... how do I know which one is correct, without being able to see the profile while adding it?

The first one should always be the main one imho, because all the other versions were created by mistake. Can you put the link here, when you're done?

Nevermind - I already found it.

I chose the first one in the dropdown, it appears to be correct

Having some real problems here. I'm trying to select this credit: http://www.biblio.gs/credit/32354-Penguin-Group-Canada
Every time I do, it creates a new entity:
http://www.biblio.gs/credit/55564-Penguin-Group-Canada
http://www.biblio.gs/credit/55566-Penguin-Group-Canad (autocomplete problem, here, too?)
http://www.biblio.gs/credit/55567-Penguin-Group-Canada

I've run into the bug before but this is the first time it's happened specifically selecting the suggested credit. Maybe has something to do with the fact there are parentheses in the name? Or that at first I tried to enter a Name Variation?

Thanks for letting us know, I have listed that as an issue for us to look into.
